What Is HTML Hosting?

HyperText Markup Language (HTML) hosting is a service for website owners that allows them to publish their website online. To place a website on the Internet, it must be placed on a server; while website owners can do this with their own servers, this is typically done by web hosting businesses. There are three main types of HTML hosting, including free, shared and dedicated. HTML hosting often does not host HTML exclusively but also supports other languages that affect websites. HTML can function independent of a server, so the server typically does not need to upgrade to support new versions of HTML.

Website files can normally be viewed locally on an owner’s computer screen, but this typically is not very effective if the website is not on the Internet. To get the website online, it must be added to a server, and HTML hosting is used to host the most common website language. A user can do this by him or herself with a personal server, but running a server can be intensive, so it usually is outsourced to a hosting company.

HTML hosting comes in three main types of packages, depending on how much server space the user needs. Free hosting does not cost anything, but the user does not get a unique domain name and he or she typically gets very little server space. Shared hosting lets the user purchase partial server space, meaning other websites are hosted on the same server, and he or she gets a medium amount of memory and bandwidth. Dedicated HTML hosting is when the website gets its own server, which offers the most memory and bandwidth.

Unlike some coding languages that are directly supported by the server, such as PHP, HTML functions independent of the server.

While there may be some HTML hosting companies that exclusively host HTML, this is rare. That is because most websites include other coding languages to set the design elements and special effects. Display is commonly set with cascading style sheets (CSS), JavaScript® is often used for special effects, and Hypertext Preprocessing (PHP) is used for dynamic sections.

Unlike some coding languages that are directly supported by the server, such as PHP, HTML functions independent of the server. This means a website owner should be able to use a new version of HTML without having to upgrade a server and without having to wait for an HTML hosting company to upgrade its servers. This usually makes it easier for website owners to transition to newer HTML versions, unlike PHP, for which some hosting companies may not host the most recent version.
