How do I Choose the Best Water-Resistant Cases?

Water-resistant cases are made to protect computers and other electronics from moisture damage, though such cases can be used to protect any objects, not just electronics. When choosing the best water-resistant cases for your purposes, be sure to consider what you will be using the case for, how much money you have to spend, and whether the cases you are considering are well-constructed. Remember that any seams in the construction of the cases are where water is most likely to enter, causing damage to the contents, so be sure to inspect seams carefully and take note as to what measures are taken to keep water out.

Some water-resistant cases are made to be used as backpacks or messenger bags. The lining inside the bag is a waterproof material to prevent rain, snow, and other moisture from entering the compartment in which the computer will be stored. If you plan on doing a lot of walking with your laptop in your bag, this is a good choice because it is lightweight, easy to carry, and able to transport other objects safely stowed away from moisture as well. Choose a bag that is large enough for your needs and comfortable enough to be worn in a variety of conditions.

Travelers often opt for hardshell water-resistant cases for computers and laptops because such cases will not only protect the computer from water damage, but also from impact damage. When choosing a hardshell case for a computer or other electronics such as a camera, be sure to choose one with a rubber gasket that runs around the entire seam. This gasket will prevent water from leaking through the openings. A good hardshell case will feature one or more latches to keep the case securely closed; some even feature locks to prevent theft. Be sure the water-resistant cases you choose feature foam padding inside to protect the electronics from impacts, and make sure the case features a sturdy and comfortable handle for easy transport.

Remember that the cost of water-resistant cases will vary significantly based on the size and quality of the unit, as well as its intended purpose. A camera case, for example, will be quite expensive because it is a specialized design, while smaller, simpler square cases will be relatively inexpensive. Larger cases for larger computers will also be quite expensive, so be sure to research common prices for the size of case you are considering.
