A space saving computer is one that takes up significantly less space than a traditional computer, even if that traditional computer is a tower box or desktop box. Some may consider a computer in a tower box to be a space saving computer, but in reality, it takes up as much space as a horizontal desktop model, just in a different way. There are a couple of different configurations for space savings computers that are employed regularly.
A space saving computer has a few different options when it comes to conserving room. The first is to do something different with the central processing unit (CPU). Other than the monitor, which some argue is not actually part of the computer, the CPU takes up the most space.
The options for the CPU usually center around one of two solutions. The first is to incorporate it as part of the keyboard. There are a couple of manufacturers who take this approach to design a space saving computer. The other option often utilized is to make the CPU inclusive with the monitor. Apple has often used this approach, with some of the new Macintosh computers being designed this way.
Another option for a space saving computer is to simply stop using a desktop computer. Many companies have switched to notebook computers, for a number of different reasons, including space issues. The notebook can be docked to a station which allows for network access when used at work. The notebook computer, whether used at work or for mobile computing, usually saves a substantial amount of space.
In addition to the CPU, other components of a computer can also be made to save space. Keyboards can be designed to take up very little space. Monitors, especially the newer flat panels, can not only take up less space above the desk, they also take up less space at the base, which sits directly on the desk.
For those who feel that a space saving computer is not practical or desirable, there are some other options as well. For example, using space saving furniture, or multi-purpose furniture is a possibility. This furniture, often modular in design, can fit with other pieces and end up saving a tremendous amount of space.
One of the biggest considerations when looking at a space saving computer design is the cost. Often, the advancements in technology required to assemble computers in smaller packages costs additional money. While the cost/benefit analysis may reveal there is an advantage to a space saving computer, it could also reveal there is no substantial benefit.
