I have always thought that quality film making is more about how you shoot the movie than how you edit it. If the movie is good it will require a minimal amount of editing. Often times directors will try and cover up bad acting or poorly shot scenes by chopping them up into little pieces until you barely know what is going on anymore.

For that reason I use a free hd video editing software that had almost no bells and whistles. You can add credits and music and shuffle up the scenes but there are no filters or effects that can be used. For my needs it does everything I need it to do.

There is some decent free video editing software out there but in general you will need to spend some money if you want a program that can actually handle a complicated editing task.
