What are Geocaching Maps?

Geocaching maps are guides that pinpoint a series of concealed containers throughout a given area. Geocaching is an activity that combines recent technological advances with the thrill of an old fashioned treasure hunt. Geocaches are small boxes that contain a collection of random items and a logbook. Geocaching is the process of finding these containers and logging your journey to locate them. Participants also have the option of trading one of their own items for an item in the box.

Geocaches can be placed by any individual. A sturdy container should be used to ensure that the contents are not damaged by inclement weather or wildlife in the area. If the land the geocache is placed on is privately owned, permission must be obtained from the landowner for placement of the cache. The final step in placing a geocache is looking up the GPS coordinates of the hidden container.

Once hidden, a geocache can be listed with a variety of geocaching groups. Each group has its own specific requirements for the caches they will list. All the geocaches archived by the group will be listed on a map of the area.

Each hidden cache's GPS coordinates will be included in geocaching maps. The website that provides the map may also include some details about each cache. A description of the container, including its type and size are typically included. Information about the area and clues on finding the cache may be provided as well.

Geocaching maps may be used to see a general overview of the area and select a cache that will be nearby. These maps are not required on the hunt for the cache, however. All the seeker needs are the GPS coordinates and a GPS receiver. The receiver is then used to locate the hidden item.

A topographical map might be useful in locating geocaches that are particularly hard to find. This additional map is often provided by the same site that lists the hidden caches. While not required, this type of map can be handy in navigating the area to the given coordinates.

Geocaching is an increasingly popular activity for individuals, groups, and families. For those interested in this type of high-tech treasure hunt, a quick visit to any of several geocaching websites will provide you with geocaching maps and instructions to get you started
