An html tag is a word, or group of words, used to describe the content of a website. When multiple tags are present, the website may utilize a tag cloud to list all of the tags, or the most popular tags, used in its content. This visual depiction is often in the shape of a cloud.

Most html tags consist of only one word. Normally, tags are listed alphabetically within a tag cloud. Important and frequently used tags are often indicated within the tag cloud by a darker color or a larger font size. These measures help the user to intuitively locate material needed by various search options. Each tag has html coding to allow it to serve as a hyperlink, which takes the user to the tag-related content he or she is seeking.

Tag cloud arrangements can also be formed in other sequences. They are usually created with inline html elements, but can range from random order, to alignment by weight, to many other methods of classification. The most often used composition of a tag cloud is an alphabetical listing arranged in a rectangle with a line-by-line format. These arrangements are often determined by user input.

Tag cloud applications are divided into three categories. These are not always ascertained by their display, but by their meaning. The first type includes a tag cloud for each item on the website. Larger sizes in these clouds indicate the number of times a tag has been used.

The second category is called the global tag cloud, and is used to sort all of a site's content. It also lists items generated by the site's users. Larger font sizes represent tags that have been administered to a variety of items. The third type of tagging includes categorization by the quantity of materials present.

The first prominent use of tag clouds was on photo sharing websites. They are often used in social networking, weblogs, online articles, and other content. Many website users, bloggers, and other content creators use tags in organizing their website materials. Some websites or blog hosting sites offer optional tag clouds.

People interested in creating tags can learn to do so by utilizing a tag tutorial. This will typically depict html tags and how to use them. Some websites function solely to create tag clouds based on content. These may include optional color schemes, layouts, and font sizes for the user to choose from.
